Look at the penalty for failure, dude
The
Miles Todd Crash Video shows it all. (Video warning: adult language) The awe of what mountain biking can be like (in the mountains) and the hazards of a misstep (or miss-pedal in this case). Do you see the fallen rider just to the right of the bike seat? He's 150 feet below his bike.
While I do not ride this type of terrain (yet), I do find a small solace in the
video. To survive with little more than a helmet, backpack and gloves says a lot for wearing protective gear. Also, the small (30 foot) drops I see around here (Florida) don't look so bad any more.
Just so you know: I don't know who Miles Todd is.

Quote of the Day
"The most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention. A loving silence often has far more power to heal and to connect than the most well-intentioned words."
- Rachel Naomi Remen -
What a week.
Monday seems like a month ago. I worked until well after 9 pm.
Tuesday: 17 + miles on my mountain bike, at night, after leaving work an hour late.
Wednesday I left work early to prepare for the PC meeting presentation that night.
Thursday I left early for a Doctor appointment. Follow up tests need to be scheduled.
Friday is still going, full speed.
Why do we blog?
I did a presentation tonight about weB LOGS and I tried to address two major questions.
1. What is a blog?
2. What is a blog
for?
The first one is easy if you talk structure because the basic building blocks of blogs appear similar enough once you know what to look for.
The harder question to answer is "What do I do with a blog?". The most common answer I hear ("Anything you want") is not specific or descriptive enough. Another comment made makes sense too: 'If there are people out there that can write better than me
and they have more time to write than I do, why should I blog?'
Of course the idea of the blog presentation was to spark the imagination not find all the answers. With a blog you can either share
your information (post) or collect (read)
others' shared information. Good Blogs need both activities.
People didn't know what spreadsheets were used for when they first came out. It takes time and practice to learn. Will blogging have as much effect on publishing information in the future as spreadsheets impacted how we handled rows and columns? Who knows.
Several things I do know:
- My blog is not perfect. Because I have limited time to devote to writing and editing, each post is a compromise between time-to-perfect and good enough.
- My blog could be better. I could research more, link more, post more often, etc.
- Blogs are important. The sharing of information and ideas is always valuable.
- My voice, like yours if you post or comment, can be read by anyone, anywhere there is internet access.
I blog because I want to get out of myself and find out what this blogsphere is all about. I have a long way to go.
To Post or not to Post
That is the question. To find balance between a busy life and reporting here on how busy life is. Constant question and constant struggle.
Tonight we spent an hour and a half riding the trails at night. There were about 20 riders total out there at
Wilderness Trails. It's so fun riding at night and tonight was a good ride. The tire pressure running on the Prophet was 50 pounds in the rear and 45 pounds in the front. This presure seems to work better in the High Rollers than 35 pounds used normally. 17 miles total (estimated distance)
What a (New) Year
It seems like just a short time ago the biggest worry was something called the Y2k bug. The fear was: everything is going to fail because computers would not properly handle the year change from 1999 to 2000. The fear didn't make sense. Electricity, water and traffic lights never check the date to see if they should shut down or not. That fear did not seem reasonable. Besides, we have learned about new fears over the past 4 years.
Yet, terrorists have been blowing up buildings since explosives were available. Florida has been hit by four hurricanes in the same season before. Even the devastating tsunami was not the first recorded event for the area.
What is new is the magnitude of destruction. The number of lives effected.
All the more reason for each of us to live each precious moment as well as we can. That includes helping others effected by the destruction.
2005 brings all the promise of a new and wonderful year. That promise can be brought about by our outlook on life. No fear needed.
