Quote of the day: Face the things you do not want to face

"You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do." -- Eleanor Roosevelt (1884 - 1962)

Always a learning process, always a changing environment, always what we least expect. We get through each day on the strength we take with us from the days behind us. Each days' step forward is another chance to gain strength. From facing fears or from making it through another wonderful day.

I try to apply thoughts like these to every day. Big "stuff" right on down to the little stuff. Last night I faced several fears (unintentionally) and took them on directly......sideways

Mountain biking. At night. Being LEAD on a quaint and twisty section of trail all covered with pine needles. TOO fast. Mentally distracted.

OK, in English. I fell sideways as my bike slide out from under me on a tight left turn between three medium sized pine trees. I landed on my left hip and left forearm, displaced from my bike. I stopped moving for what felt like minutes (taking body inventory) and turned around to face the other riders quickly approaching from behind, in the darkness. I was laying in the middle of the trail and we had been going FAST. (10 miles an hour is fast in a dark, twisty section like this with trees and pine needles). Fortunately, I had been far enough in front of the second rider that he had a chance to stop before he ran me over. (his front tire stopping inches from my legs.) My first words were "I'm OK! but I think my battery came out. Can you put my [light] battery back in my backpack?". "Sure" was the reply.

I enjoy mountain biking and want to be faster, but that now means going faster on turns. Some people still leave me behind in the twisty sections even though I catch up on the straights. I've Been afraid to fall on turns. I am not afraid to night ride, I love it. I conquered that fear on hallowe'en night (October 31) in 2003. Being lead is another fear: I don't want to slow those behind me in turns. The final fear of being distracted while riding is something I deal with on every ride. When I ride fast there is NO time to think. Leave all your non-bike thoughts at the parking lot when you want to ride too fast!

The Tie-in. I was afraid to lead in a twisty section and afraid to fall on a tight turn. Afraid to slow those behind me and afraid to ride distracted. Forced to face all that in a single moment, I fell and came through almost fine! (sore hip and road rash on my left hip and forearm are the only visable results) I avoided being run over and I was able to keep riding.

How will I apply what I learned to that next turn, corner or major event in my life?

Do we live daily in the face of our fears? Do we live TO face our fears?

Actually, I think our fears just appear unexpectedly and susprise us. Then we try to to deal with it in our own way.

Time Travel, You can't take it back

Have you ever wanted to go back in time? Why? What would you do there? Would you change an event? Stop something from happening? Start something? Buy Microsoft stock?
The imagination finds many possibilities. What have you learned from events since that past event? How would you apply that knowledge to the future?
All we have is the here and now. We can apply everything we've learned in the past to the events going on now. Or we can repeat mistakes made in the past and start the loop again.

Put the Lime in the Coke, you nut!... Part Deux

I had NO idea that my original post about the new coke would generate such buzz.

I've been trying to find a copy of the commercial ever since. However, even the Coke commercial site doesn't include a video of this new ad. The product release has been known and is included on the Coke New Products page. The Coca-Cola with lime product was released in "First Quarter 2005"

"COCA-COLA WITH LIME

Coca-Cola North America today announced that it will introduce Coca-Cola with Lime in the United States in the first quarter of 2005. Many people already enjoy a slice of lime with their Coca-Cola so it seemed only natural to include a splash of lime flavor."

I usually don't drink soda but I think the commercial is brilliant.

Update: View the Lime Coke video here.

Enjoy!

Watch Your F'ing Language!

BEYOND the "F" word. I know it's hard but can you work with me here? One night, during a message session on the HBO community site for the series "Six Feet Under", there was a long discussion about how many times this F word was used during that particular episode. Most of the comments indicated it was just for shock value. About a year later, I watched the Series Premier of "Deadwood". Talk about shock value? I didn't even notice the Six Feet Under episode compared to this one! Lost count after just 15 minutes! I kept watching more episodes and I'm glad I did.

And now? I'm listening to the language again but past certain words. Deadwood has become a favorite of mine because of this. I just need to learn to speak English again, I think."Your repast awaits you" says Farnum as he finishes the final touches on the meal for his guests. Does that mean "Dinner is served"?
I usually have to watch an episode several times before I understand what they are really saying. (At least one time with Closed Caption on) I think it's fantastic they put that kind of effort into the dialog of the show. It's a different language than the English I hear daily.

When Farnum, the mayor, wants to start a rumor about losing claims in the camp he starts: "Not for us, apparently, the placid harbor, on which voyages near complete, to bog and rot, bob and rot, becalmed. For us, to the very end, the dizzying surges of the storm, and its crashing descents."

huh? I think I can figure it out. Maybe another listen or two.

I'm thinking that you and I can get through this together, no matter what happens.

The character Al Swearengen said it better than I:
"Whatever lurks ahead of grievous abominations and disorder, you and me walk into it together like always."

Finally, "I offer you these in hope you'll wear 'em for a good long f'ing time, and in this f'ing camp."

Hey! Watch that language Al!

Me talk java? To make the BLOG more logical, YES!

I don't really 'talk' Java! However, I have added a JavaScript routine to my blog template!
Most BLOGS start with the MOST RECENT post at the TOP of the page, followed by the older posts below. Settings for each BLOG control how many posts display on the main page.
The one thing that has driven me CRAZY about BLOGs since the beginning is the fact that, by default, the Archives section is REVERSE ORDER. (Meaning OLDEST at the top) That has always been confusing to me. (The main section is newest at the top but the Archive section was Oldest at the top?)

I needed to fix that.

Look over in the Archives section. Note the current order. If you see the newest month at the top then you are seeing the new JavaScript in action! If you see the oldest month at the top then you may not be able to use JavaScript. (I kept the code in to allow for browsers that have JavaScript turned off) . The best part is the fact that I don't know HTML or JavaScript!

If you use blogger (or want to view how I did this) you can check out this instruction page.

Me, A Year ago

This picture was taken at a Mountain Biking event in March of 2004. I've resent it today using the Hello interface instead of Flickr. I don't even own that bike any more.
Uploaded by me

It's raining almost

Ok, it's sprinkling a little and I'm feeling better. Earlier, I couldn't stay awake so I went outside to walk for a few minutes. Everything seems quieter when it's cloudy but not stormy. The walk helped me to wake up too. Just enough to talk about it...

Sometimes I feel like a Nut, Sometimes I ...

....

Do you know what the next word is? Don't think about it, just think about WHY you know what the next word is. Is it because you read my mind? Can't be. I'm not thinking about it as you read this. Is it because of the connection previously made between you and I? Perhaps, but what about the person reading this message who has no idea who I am AND knows what the next word is? Hmmm

How do we communicate more than just the words and thoughts we use?

Maybe it is as simple as a candy bar. (Ok, TWO candy bars in this case). Shared experience is my point. Even if you never saw the original commercials for the candy you may have heard the thought before. The words here are not even the same as in the lyrics. Books, movies, television shows, etc all may have similar impact. Perhaps.

What I don't get is why one person knows while the next person has no idea. Is it simply a question of paying attention? or missing the connection to a "shared thought"?

...mounds Don't!"

Put the Lime in the Coke, you nut

and drink em both up... (March 24 Updated Post with video link here)

Few advertisement campaigns make me take notice and think "Wow, why didn't I think about that?" Cool combination.

Take a popular song and tie your product to it by changing a detail or two. In this case a couple of words.

Look for the advertisement on a screen near you.

(This post is about the creativity I like involved with the advertising industry. It's NOT about a 'great new product idea')

Lyrics:
Put the lime in the Coke you nut, you drink em both together
Put the lime in the Coke you nut...
Now let me get this straight
You put the lime in the Coke you nut you drink em both up
Put the lime in the Coke you nut and drink em both together
Put the lime in the Coke you nut then you'll feel better
Put the lime in the Coke you nut and drink em both up
Put the lime in the Coke you nut and drink em both together
Wow! this is coke, with lime

Server Crash

Server Administrator: Chassis intrusion detected
Sensor Location: Chassis Intrusion
Chassis location: Main System Chassis

Ok, I think that message means that the computer thinks it has been moved or opened. In fact, if that's true then, based on the messages I received today... The server was moved 60 times in a 4 hour period.
I used to know servers, back when you needed to know all the time. You should still know what's what but it's amazing to me how you just turn them on and use them. Not like the old days.

Well, the server work took my blog time for today so I'll try again tomorrow.

"Relationships" is a topic I want to handle some time.

How do you find interesting blogs?

Do you care? Do you ever find interesting blogs? If so, How?

I am always surprised at how many interesting sites are out there. For every ten blogs I visit, I find one or two that interest me. I almost always find inspiration.

I find them by:
- Clicking the "Next Blog" button (top right corner of the page)
- Visit the Recently Updated Blogs page (when it works)
- Visit sites that refer to mine (through Sitemeter in k-57 Blog's case)
- Vist Blogs of Interest (or Links) found on other blogs
- Click on one of my profile interests and view the profiles returned.
- Visit blog listing sites.
- Visit the blogs found in the profiles of people that comment on posts (yours, or any, blog)

Tonight I found an interesting twist or maybe I just learned another aspect of blogging. First, I noticed increased activity (a blip actually) here on this site for a day or so.
The reason was a referring blog: Spots of Blogs, A place to find Blogspots of interest. This site links back to here. That explains the increased activity and suggests another way to find blogs. Hence, that last method of finding sites.

The increased activity also suggests that people will find your blog and use it even if it's less than a week old as is the Spots of Blog site is today.

That should be encouraging to you.

Splileng Eorors? Who ceras

See how fast you can read this post.

It's from another blogger. I didn't mean this post I meant THIS post from the Rebirth of Blogging.

Time Traveler 2036

Yesterday, when I was researching a quote from a Star Trek movie, I ran across a little site I found interesting.

This message caught my eye:

Greetings. I am a time traveler from the year 2036. I am on my way home after getting an IBM 5100 computer system from the year 1975.

My "time" machine is a stationary mass, temporal displacement unit manufactured by General Electric. The unit is powered by two, top-spin, dual-positive singularities that produce a standard, off-set Tipler sinusoid.

I will be happy to post pictures.

I continued to read and couldn't stop. This person alegedly posted for some time in late 2000 and early 2001. Reading about it is like reading a good book. The content intrigued me and the wave after wave of thought changing ideas felt challenging.

I think you have many choices about how to approach this topic:
1. Believe it
2. Read it with an open mind
3. Don't believe it
4. Wait and see

2 and 4 are great options to take.

My own thoughts about what I would have asked this person or what I would do in the past if I were able to time travel kept popping into my mind. It no longer mattered to me if it was real, a hoax or just someone going through a LOT of effort to challenge the thinking of people. Perhaps it was just someone trying to draw attention to certain theories of the times.

Here are some related sites. Some sites explain things well, others...Well.. I personally thing it's worth a look!

Enjoy!

Time Travel Portal (This is the one I read first)
The John Titor Times This is a specific site
Anomalies Net This one is easier to read
Communities at Anomalies Net Formatted Topics
John Titor's story This one includes his "Military insignia" as well as a good summary.

What do you think about this?
